Classroom management is something a teacher continually works at to improve. You can never know enough tricks of the trade. I have been given first hand experience with many behavioral issues within the classroom through my student teaching. I have modified, eliminated, created, many different techniques to manage a classroom.
The key of classroom management is to create a classroom community right from the beginning of day one. Students need to grow a bond with the teacher, and the students need to grow bonds with each other. It is important to establish this sense of community from the beginning because it tends to eliminate bullying, tattling, fighting, and disrespect. Once the students learn to treat each other and the teacher (you) with respect and love, it makes for a healthy, safe classroom environment.
Some techniques I have used in my classrooms, have been 1,2,3 eyes on me, clapping hands to a beat; card up, card down, wiggle time songs, lights off. There are probably things I do that I don't even realize. However the most successful tool for me was creating a mini lesson each morning around a book titled, The Secret Remedy. This amazing book took seven days to complete, about a half hour each morning, and we did the things in the book. It was a touching story, and students took a lot from that experience. It created a bond between us and allowed us to grow in trust and love for the classroom community.
