Every day of our lives we are always communicating with individuals; whether it be phone calls, texts, e-mails, face-to-face, Skype, etc. etc. As an educator, communication is key to the success of your classroom, but also your relationships with students, parents, and staff. Parents need to know that you are taking care of their child and what is happening in the classroom. I've learned to ALWAYS keep a strong communication line with parents, because it creates an open, established bond of trust.
Every day as a teacher, I am communicating with my students. However, communication isn't always instructions/directions. I use simple non-verbal ques such as sign language to let a student tell me when they need to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water. Additionally, my written communication is key to the success of the classroom. Many times I have written detailed instructions for students to follow. It eliminates confusion, and it's great practice reading!
As a role model in the classroom and the school, it's just as important to practice good communication skills with any student and/or staff. I found it a necessary skill to make good eye contact when speaking, demonstrating taking turns when speaking, and appropriate volume in and outside the class.
